Stand By Your Man (Don't Let Carlson Bring Him Down)
Fox News has forced the Democratic Party into calling for the resignation of Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax. A litany of Fox News anchors from Tucker Carlsen to Laura Ingraham have seized upon this situation to claim that Democrats who called for Brett Kavanaugh to be withdrawn as Donald Trump´s Supreme court pick due to sexual assault allegations were behaving hypocritically now that a Democrat was the accused.
So predictably 2020 democratic presidential frontrunners have reluctantly called for Fairfax´s resignation, one by one Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Elizabeth Warren and Corey Booker have bowed to pressure from right-wing media. However the false equivalency being drawn between the cases of Kavanaugh and Fairfax is very disturbing.
In the case of Kavanaugh we have a privileged privately educated white man accused of sexual assault chosen by a President who has himself bragged about sexually assaulting women. Kavanaugh now finds himself sitting on the Supreme court his position secured by the determination of the Republican party to place a conservative anti-abortion judge on the highest court. So in essence a privileged white man was pushed into the most powerful position in the judicial system by privileged white men in spite of sexual assault in order that he in turn could solidify that shared privilege.
On the other is a black man who has risen to a position of political power in spite of the systemic barriers which exist to prevent black people from rising above their circumstances. Unfortunately the Democratic Party is unwilling to follow the lead of the Republican Party. Rather than support a minority representative accused of sexual assault they are running scared. It seems that the racist trope of the black man as a predator remains powerful. Justin Fairfax may yet be found to be a sexual predator but Democrats should defend their representatives accused of sexual assault just as the Republican Party defend theirs - particularly when they are minorities.
