So it seems, to the delight of right-wing outlets, Jussie Smollett wasn´t assaulted by a pair of racist and homophobic Trump supporters. The latest reports suggest rather that Smollett orchestrated the whole incident. Fox news is luxuriating in reports that in fact Smollett hired two Nigerian brothers to assault him in order to paint Trump supporters as racists.

Smollett has long been an outspoken critic of the racist, bigoted President of the United States and like all of us he has been frustrated by the fact that Trump continues to sow division. The hate mongering from the White house has made America a perilous place for minorities. Not surprisingly there has been a spike in hate crime since his inauguration. However these crimes have received none of the attention being lavished on the Jussie Smollett case.

If indeed it turns out that Jussie Smollett invented the whole incident he should be praised for using his celebrity to highlight the plight of minorities in Trump´s America. Rather than facing the prospect of prison the Empire star should be celebrated as a hero. He is an artist and this performance is based on a true story. While the specific details of the incident may be untrue, the bigger truth is perfectly represented by the story which Smollett told.
