Is John Bercow The Churchill For Our Times?

Is John Bercow The Churchill For Our Times?

There is no doubt among the public and among parliament that Brexit is the biggest threat to the United Kingdom in over 75 years. The threat back then was of great bombs falling from the sky and foreign invaders massing on the French coast. For a time Great Britain stood alone while mainland Europe was engulfed in darkness.

The current situation is riddled with echoes and inversions of that time and although violence is not imminent the threat is just as real. We stand alone once again but this time it is by choice rather than necessity. The mortars have been replaced by a ticking time bomb at the heart of the country where a simmering resentment of Europe and casual xenophobia was allowed to grow unchecked for forty years - eventually exploding in the Brexit Referendum. The hoards of foreign invaders are still there but this time they are dark-skinned and imaginary, in photos on the sides of busses.

In the Second World War an unlikely hero arose in the shape of Winston Churchill. A bombastic career politician who began life as a Conservative before recanting to join the Liberal Party. A man who despite all his personal proclivities and addictions had a single-minded vision and the sheer force of will to see it through. Where do we look for such a saviour today? God knows Theresa May would love to cast herself in that role. There is no doubt that she is stubborn but despite this she appears to lack any real direction.

Fortunately is seems there is another unlikely hero emerging from the chaos - John Bercow. Also a Conservative politician but one who seems a liberal a heart. A rambunctious individual with his own personal demons who has the authority and the nous to possibly stop the Brexit-shambles in it’s tracks. His recent manoeuvres as Speaker of the House have managed to derail the hard Tory Brexit that the ERG crave and at the same time remove No Deal from the table entirely - no mean feat in a divided Westminster.

Naturally he is not popular with all MPs in the house and has been labelled a traitor by the harder elements of the Tory party (a badge of honour some would say) but yet he seems to have a broad reach, co-operating with remainers from all parties when the time was right. Here’s hoping he can continue what he has started and rescue this country from annihilation.
