Bernie has the Right Stuff
Bernie Sanders has shown that he is the one who has the conviction and the authenticity that we need to defeat Trump. Frontrunner Joe Biden has undergone a Damascene conversion to modern progressive politics and hopes that we will forget about his past but Bernie has not changed and in a world that craves authenticity, his time has come.
What sets Sanders apart from the rest is that he really believes what he says and he shows the guts to stick with his ideas even when they are unpopular or dare I say it politically incorrect. When challenged on his belief that convicts should be allowed to vote he didn’t flip-flop or give in to demagoguery. The right wanted to paint him as a dangerous radical but in reality what emerged from that exchange is that the senator from Vermont isn’t playing politics or floating focus group tested policies. He believes what he says and he is willing to stand by it. In this respect he is unlike any of the other democratic candidates.
In fact his performance on the Fox News town hall was reminiscent of the man he wants to dethrone. Sanders might not appreciate the comparison but in his unflappable conviction he resembled Trump, even though politically and morally they are worlds apart. One of the things that attracted voters to the current president, including democratic voters, was that although they might not have agreed with everything he said they admired the fact that he didn’t back down in the face of media criticism. His constituency saw him as someone who would follow through on his promises however unpopular.
If we compare Sanders to the rest of the democratic field we see a group of candidates scurrying to the left to try to catch up with the new progressive politics of the democratic base. How can voters trust the newly discovered progressive credentials of former gun lobby darling Kirsten Gillibrand, lock’em up and throw away the key prosecutor Kamala Harris or political opportunists like Beto O’Rourke, Corey Booker or Pete Buttigieg. Joe Biden´s problematic history is likewise well documented. If we want a progressive president who won’t forget what he believes in as soon as he gets the nomination then the only choice is Bernie.
