National Lottery U-Turn On Mermaids Funding? Careful Now!
It was extremely disappointing to hear that The National Lottery has decided to review its decision to fund Mairmaids a charity dedicated to supporting transgender children and their families. It feels like the current climate of hostility toward the transgender community is not just intensifying but starting to bear fruit.
What’s even more galling is that the main reason for the review was a complaint lodged online by the writer Graham Linehan. Linehan is most famous as the creator and writer of Father Ted, an occasionally funny sitcom that frequently lampooned homosexuals, cross-dressers, Chinese and Irish people for cheap laughs.
Linehan is also part of The Fair Cop group who are campaigning to get the police to water down the definition of what constitutes as Trans hate crime. They are projecting this as a free speech issue but that is a doubtful motive. Even given the freedom to express your opinion, why would you use it to target a vulnerable an marginalised section of society as both Linehan and Harry Miller, the group leader, have done.
The truth is that up to now the cis population have tolerated the Trans community and were happy for it to exist and grow in the shadows. Now that the movement has gained exposure and visibility the pushback from mainstream media and cisgender activists appears to have begun in earnest. We need to support our Trans community now more than ever.
